With release 1.5.4 of Snappy, I've finally published a set of features which will hopefully make easier to work with multiple screenshots. Among the other things, I've added 'Batch operations', which will let to apply an effect to all the selected screenshots, even the newest one such as 'Drop shadow' and 'Fracture border' (the screenshot in this post is an example of the latest). I hope you can find it useful!

As asked by many user, I've added a new capture mode that allows users to retrieve "alpha channel" info of windows with transparency elements (borders, shadows, glass panels). It's quite a workaround and a bit rude, but for the most part it works as expected: to recover alpha I simply take two screenshots of the window, one with a black bakground, the other with a white one. This approach is more or less the same illustrated by Ian Griffiths in his blog (thank you for the idea and the explanation...). This mode must be enabled in settings, otherwise Snappy will continue to use default capture mode.

That said, in this new version I'va also added useful features (well, at least for me...):

• Open with external app
• Selection tool in screenshot editor (currently only rectangle selection, but list will grow...)
• Add images from file system
• Cut/paste screenshot selection

Well, it seems I've forgotten to add a very basic feature to Snappy: direct print. I still prefer pdf templates (much more versatile) but for users who prefer a more direct approach, you can find new version here. Oh, two language files added (my thanks goes to Åke Engelbrektson for Swedish and sapfir57 for Russian), also some missing strings were fixed (again, thanks to Åke).

In the example above, all the screenshots will be printed as to fill 76% of the page width, while margins will take 12% of available space. In this case, screenshot index and path will pe printed as caption in every page.

Thanks to Davit T., I've fixed a tedious bug on OldBar autohide function, which was preventing the bar to hide itself when focus was gained (the hell knows if I've used right tenses...). While I was on that, I've also added a basic theme support.

Snappy 1.5.0 is now available for download. In this release:

• Added new 'Area capture': define your fixed area once, capture it when you want...
• Added new 'Aero mode' window capture, for better results with translucent/glass windows
• Added window padding parameter to capturing windows and part of their background (dropped shadow included)
• Removed extra border from maximized windows
• Missing transalations on some menus were fixed
• Portable installation is now self-contained (no more references to appdata path, even for temporary data)

Just to better match a hardly matchable desktop background (pink and silver, eye shocking), I've developed a new version of OldBar, now fully customizable. While in the way, I've also added multimonitor support...

1) Evitate di usare questa versione per la vostra produzione (solo test!)

After 4 months of hesitancy, I've finally managed to switch to Windows 7. The process was not smooth at all, due to all the useful stuff my old xp has accumulated in all this year, but finally I've succesfully transfered my personal toolset to the new notebook. But what a surprise: the toolbars are no more detachable from the taskbar! This feature, that I was using since they were introduced in the shell enhancements delivered with ie 4.1 (we are talking of Windows 95, here...), was one of the most useful for whoever want fast access to apps and data without all the switchs to desktop or start menu. Still, it seems that Microsoft has removed this functionality.

But that's the progress, no need to complain: there are plenty of third part toolbars available and all are shiny, cool and eye-candy...but no one gives me the same feeling of simpleness that the old toolbar gave. Maybe it's just a matter of time, and in some days the new toolbars may even be capable of erasing even the memory of the old. But, I'm a very lazy person, and  I don't like the feel of getting forcibly accustomed to something that I don't even need (does this last phrase make any sense?): so I've decided to write a small app, trying to catch the simpleness of the old bar and mimics for the most part its behaviour (or at least the small part of its behaviour that I strictly need).

If someone else is feeling orphan of the old good toolbar and want to give a try to my app, here's the link:

The app is a one-day work, so it has a straight-to-the-point interface. During the first run, the application will ask you to be restared (it's just a workaround for a bug I don't have the time investigate further). After that, you can click on the toolbar with right mouse button to access the toolbar menu:

Most of the items are self-explanatory, let me just say that in the 'Toolbar folder' you can change the folder where the links used by the toolbar are stored. 

By clicking on 'Settings', you will (guess what) access the options panel, where you can change toolbar layout (autohide, always on top,...) and buttons appearance (flat, with captions, small icons,...).

I hope someone other than me could find it useful. Feedbacks (and bug reports) are welcome.

Fresca fresca di pubblicazione sul sito, ecco a voi la prima versione "presentabile" di MicroFatture 3.4.0, MicroFatture 3.4.0 Beta4. 

Si tratta ancora di una versione beta, la versione ufficiale rimane ancora la 3.3.2: chi avesse però tempo e voglia di sperimentare in parallello quest'altra versione, riceverebbe tutto il nostro apprezzamento (solo morale, ovviamente). Per i dettagli vi rimando direttamente al forum, qui voglio solo rimarcare una volta in più che in questa versione ci sono stati significativi cambiamenti alla modalità di archivizione delle fatture, pertanto mai quanto in questo caso:

1) Evitate di usare questa versione per la vostra produzione (solo test!)

2) Segnalateci ogni anomalia, anche la più piccola...

Come potete leggere dal sito, a partire dal 1 ottobre 2011, la staff di OndaNera non risponderà più a email inerenti richieste di assistenza per MicroFatture. Non cambia nulla a livello di licenza (sempre gratuita) e nelle modalità di sviluppo del programma, ma abbiamo dovuto prendere questa decisione nella speranza che questa mossa possa finalmente favorire lo sviluppo di una community di assistenza autonoma, basata sugli utenti.

Da molti mesi infatti la mole di email relative a MicroFatture è creciuta esponenzialmente. Contrariamente a quanto ci sarebbe piaciuto, le mail riguardano principalmente richieste di assistenza su argomenti basilari (come posso cambiare il logo? non è possibile inserire uno sconto percentuale? etc...) o su problemi ricorrenti (formato data, aggiornamenti artigianali) ampiamente e frequentemente trattati sulla guida in linea, tra le faq, nei tutorial o sul forum. Pur rimandando nella maggior parte dei casi alle relative sezioni, ogni mail richiede tempo anche solo per essere letta, a volte compresa, e molto spesso anche integrata (mancando di parti fondamentali quali la versione del programma o il messaggio di errore). Essendo diventato assai gravoso il dover far fronte a così tante richieste, dopo un iniziale sforzo reclutativo di volontari, abbiamo cercato in vari modi di contenere e ridurre il problema, integrando la guida in linea, realizzando i tutorial, razionalizzando l'accesso alle varie risorse di supporto, rispondendo con maggiore frequenza alle richieste sul forum, aggiungendo una pagina facebook, o ancora chiedondovi esplicitamente di darci una mano.

Purtroppo nessuno dei nostri sforzi è stato premiato come avremmo voluto, al contrario, in prossimità dell'entrata in vigore della nuova aliquota ordinaria al 21% la situazione è precipitata: nonostante con uno sforzo notevole dati i tempi dell'approvazione avessimo inserito sia sul sito che sul forum le istruzioni per l'inserimento della nuova aliquota, siamo stati sommersi di mail, delle quali alcune particolarmente concitate e tra queste diverse dai toni piuttosto arroganti o supponenti. A pochissime di queste mail abbiamo dovuto fornire ulteriori dettagli dopo aver fornito il link della news relativa all'aggiornamento, segno che la maggior parte di queste richieste avrebbe tranquillamente potuto risolversi con una semplice visita al sito.

Ora, MicroFatture è un programma gratuito sviluppato nel tempo libero e l'assistenza è stata finora fornita con le stesse modalità: da volontari, nel tempo libero. Ma anche il nostro tempo è prezioso e onestamente nessuno di noi ha voglia di bruciarsi i pochi momenti liberi per rispondere alle solite domande. Per questa ragione, cominceremo progressivamente ad abbandonare l'assistenza via mail di MicroFatture, comiciando con il non rispondere ai quesiti già trattati su guida in linea, sito, faq o forum. La mia speranza è che questa scelta drastica possa portare finalmente al consolidamento di una community di utenti in grado di rispondere autonomamente alle richieste dei nuovi utenti e a poter formulare richieste complete, condivise e costruttive agli sviluppatori, utilizzando gli strumenti a disposizione (principalmente il forum, ma anche facebook e twitter).
